Earthquake Simulation
Coopers and Lybrand

ANZ Tower
Auckland, New Zealand

The swaying motion is distorted intentionally by a factor of over 10 times in this simulation to help us understand what is happening to the building. The movement would be up to 400mm at the top of the structure.

The earthquake data used is from El Centro, California, 1940 (7.4 on the Richter Scale)

With the advancement in computer power the analysis of this building takes approximately 10 minutes. In 1989 when the first designs were being simulated the analysis took three days on a mainframe computer.

The ANZ Tower is a 40 level commercial office building including 6 levels under the ground. It was completed in 1991.
