Christchurch Airport

Our relationship with Christchurch Airport dates back to the original terminal construction in the 1950's. In 1998 we completed the structural design work on the International Terminal.

Our latest project at the Christchurch International Airport is the Air Traffic Control tower for Airways NZ, located in the centre of the airport to afford the best view to the runways and to act as a beacon to those members of the public wishing to find the Airport itself.

The striking design is best described as an inverted cone, which presented a challenge to our engineers. By cleverly rethinking the concept of a true cone, to tapering curved panels of a constant radius, they conceived a precast concrete solution that could all come from one form and achieve a very similar shape. Our team won the tender with the most elegant and economic solution.

  • The Christchurch Air Traffic Control Tower allows for a 360 degree view around the airport and all runways.
  • Christchurch Air Traffic Control Tower: The horizontal precast panels allowed the structure to be as the architect envisioned.
  • Christchurch Air Traffic Control Tower: Our team won the tender with the most elegant and economic solution.
  • Lyall Holmes' first major commission was the Christchurch Airport, designed by Paul Pascoe - who slept on the site to ensure the orientation of the airport would be perfect.
  • Christchurch airport has expanded and grown into an International Airport - in the 1990's Holmes did the renovation of the International Hall.
