The Quayside Apartments is a 5 level building located within Whakatane’s CBD comprising retail space at ground level with carparking and apartment levels over. Holmes Consulting Groups’ Tauranga Office provided the professional Structural Engineering services associated with this development, with the Fire Engineering provided by our associates at Holmes Fire & Safety out of Wellington.

The engineering challenges that we faced during the design commission were primarily related to the varying use / space requirements over the height of the building and the buildings behaviour during an earthquake in one of New Zealand’s most highly seismic regions. Working in close association with the project Architect our Engineers developed a lightweight and efficient structural system for the building, with subsequent economies in resulting material costs and construction programme.

The outcome was a highly refined building skeleton and most importantly a satisfied client, all in all a fine example of adding value through high quality engineering.
