Seismic retrofit - earthquake engineering

Seismic retrofit and earthquake engineering are an important part of our expertise at Holmes. Most of our new projects incorporate some form of earthquake engineering in deference to where we operate.

Seismic retrofit is the renovation of a building or structure for which the codes have changed over time. Because there is always difficulty in going back to a project and strengthening or adding base isolation, as was the case with the Parliament Buildings, extensive analysis is required to deal not only with the motion, but to ensure that the building can survive the retrofitting.

  • Parliament Buildings: State-of-the-art time history computer analyses were required to effectively model all seismic building responses.
