Holmes Consulting Group was engaged to look at foundation options for the 90 turbine windfarm. One of our key focuses during the design was to minimise environmental impacts caused by construction of the foundations.
An engineering solution was developed that reduced the amount of concrete required from the original design by up to half. This provided a significant saving in terms of carbon used to provide the foundations.
The foundation design also reduced the amount of excavation required which in turn reduced the visual and ecological impact on theĀ site.
Further benefits of this sustainable solution included a significant cost and time savings.
Windfarm sites are, by their nature, very difficult places to work. Our solution allowed the foundation reinforcing to be tied offsite. Connection of the tower to the foundation was designed to be bolt free. These solutions significantly reduced the amount of work required to be carried out on the top of the Tararuas.
