Te Papa Tongarewa
(The Museum of New Zealand)
This 64 000 tonne building
is the largest in the Southern Hemisphere to be base isolated.
In an earthquake it has the potential to move sideways up to
485mm. Normal building regulations mean the building must survive
a 1 in 450 year earthquake. Te Papa is able to withstand a 1
in 2000 year earthquake (up to 7.5 on the Richter Scale).
Te Papa is home to
some of New Zealand's national artifacts as well as having a
rich knowledge of the countries past.
