University of Canterbury Maths & Science Building
The University of Canterbury Maths & Science Building, now known as the Erskine building, forms parts of the Sciences West Precinct.
The building has a full height atrium between the two distinct halves. To the north three seven storey towers house staff and post-graduate research. On the southern side, the four storey portion includes lecture theatres for undergraduate studies.
Well before the advent of Green Star, excellent energy saving features incorporated into the holistic design include the natural ventilation atrium, and the exposed feature sine-wave shaped flooring.
Holmes specifically designed the hollow precast floor units act as part of the air supply system.
The project won an NZIA National award, an NZIA regional award and the Tasman Awards Large Practice award for the architect, Architectus.
