Engineering Services for Isolation and Energy Dissipation
Holmes can provide a full range of engineering services to implement both isolation and energy dissipation strategies, from initial feasibility studies to full design, analysis and documentation.

Support for Base Isolation and Damper Hardware Manufacturers

In addition to our independent design services, Holmes provide device-specific technical services to the two New Zealand manufacturers of seismic mitigation hardware and also an Australian and US manufacturer of specific devices:

1. Skellerup Industries Ltd - Lead rubber bearings, high damping rubber bearings.

2. Robinson Seismic Ltd - Lead rubber bearings, lead extrusion dampers, rolling isolators, lead shear dampers.

3. Ludowici Bearings, Ltd - flat sliding bearings, pot bearings.

4. Fyfe Co LLC - visco elastic dampers, yielding steel brace dampers.

From these sources we can assemble the hardware for a competitive isolation or energy dissipation system for most seismic mitigation projects.

Performance Based Design
Isolation and energy dissipation seismic mitigation techniques by their nature require a performance based assessment of earthquake performance. Holmes has developed non-linear analysis software for such assessments. The software is based on the ANSR-II and ANSR-III computer programs, developed at the University of California, Berkeley.

All input for the program is prepared on an Excel spreadsheet with macros to assemble the input files for the ANSR program. Results are processed and imported into an output Excel spreadsheet. This allows engineers to prepare data, and assess results, using familiar spreadsheet tools.

Because non-linear analysis is such a complex process, we neither sell the software nor provide support resources for a large user base. However, we can provide partnering if you have a project which requires these tools. We can supply you the spreadsheet to prepare data, we will tune and debug the model, run the analyses, evaluate the results and send you the output spreadsheets.

Base isolated and damped structures require the dynamic time history method of analysis (NDP) The software is also capable of non-linear pushover analysis (NSP) for conventional structures and other forms of seismic strengthening, such as fiber reinforced polymers (composites).

Refurbishment of old Buildings

Using their own purpose built software, Holmes engineers have the ability to analyse and design strengthening options for the refurbishment and restoration of historic treasures and landmarks. Project experience includes Parliament buildings, Museums, Bridges and Commercial Developments.

Base Isolation
Base isolators insulate a building from the harsh effects of an earthquake. They are rubber, lead and steel reinforced blocks placed between the base of a building and its foundations. In an earthquake the effects of potentially catastrophic energy loaded jolts are softened by the base isolators allowing controlled response to earthquake induced movement.
